Srinagar to Doodhpathri — self drive guide
Quiet meadow • Day trip from Srinagar
At a glance: Doodhpathri is roughly 45 km from Srinagar — about 1.5 hours via Budgam. It is a wide, open meadow with a river and pine fringes — calmer than Gulmarg and ideal for a relaxed day trip. Distances and times are approximate.
Best season
April“June: Meadow in full green, river lively. Easy driving.
July“August: Monsoon showers can make the last kilometres muddy — an SUV is more comfortable.
September“November: Crisp and quiet — perhaps the best balance of weather and calm.
December“March: Snow covers the meadow; access may be limited or controlled. Only attempt with an SUV, daylight, and a checked advisory.
Road notes
The route leaves Srinagar toward Budgam and then climbs gently to the meadow. The final 8“10 km can be uneven, with occasional potholes, grazing cattle and narrow bridges. Drive slowly, give way at bridges, and keep to the track — do not drive onto the meadow grass.
Which car suits Doodhpathri?
An Adventure SUV is the comfortable default for Doodhpathri because the last stretch can be rough or muddy. A Comfort Car can manage on a dry summer day, but we generally recommend the SUV — especially if you want to explore side tracks.
Permits
No special permit is typically needed for Doodhpathri as a day visitor. Local parking or meadow-entry management may apply at peak times. Forest or meadow driving beyond marked tracks is not permitted.
Tips
- Pack a picnic blanket and light food — options are limited at the meadow.
- Fuel in Srinagar; there are fewer reliable pumps near the meadow.
- Carry cash and keep your phone charged; signal can be weak near the meadow.
- Leave no trace — take all litter back to Srinagar.
