Srinagar to Sonamarg — self drive guide
Sindh River • Thajiwas Glacier • Gateway to Zoji La
At a glance: Sonamarg is roughly 80 km northeast of Srinagar — about 2 hours on the Srinagar“Sonamarg highway (NH1) via Ganderbal and Kangan, following the Sindh River. It is the classic day trip to glaciers and meadows — and the gateway to Zoji La when the pass is open. Distances and times are approximate.
Best season
April“June: Snow still caps the heights, meadows open, river in full flow. Excellent for a first mountain drive.
July“September: Lush and busy. Long daylight, easy highway. Good for families; either car type works.
October“November: Autumn light, fewer crowds, but mornings turn cold. Choose an SUV if you plan early starts or onward toward Zoji La.
December“March: Sonamarg sees heavy snow; access can be controlled or closed on snowy days. When open, only an Adventure SUV with caution and local advice is appropriate.
Road notes
The highway to Sonamarg is largely well-surfaced with river bridges and small market stretches at Ganderbal and Kangan. The final approach enters a narrow valley with glacier views. Watch for parked vehicles near Thajiwas pony points and glacier taxi stands. Keep to daylight driving and allow time for photo stops.
Beyond Sonamarg, the road climbs to Zoji La (roughly 3,528 m). This pass is seasonal — typically closed in winter and only opened after snow clearance in spring. When open, traffic is often managed by timings or convoys. If you plan to cross toward Drass/Kargil, treat it as a separate expedition: SUV essential, early start, and a checked weather window.
Which car suits Sonamarg?
For a summer day trip on a clear day, a Comfort Car is fine. For shoulder season, winter, or any plan that includes Zoji La, take an Adventure SUV. If you are unsure, message us with dates and we will advise for that exact week.
Permits and local rules
Sonamarg itself does not usually need a tourist permit. Thajiwas Glacier access is typically by pony or local vehicle from the taxi stand — your self-drive car parks at the designated area. Zoji La crossing may have timing and vehicle-type controls when open.
Tips
- Leave Srinagar by 7“8 am for softer light and less market traffic.
- Fuel in Srinagar; top up at Ganderbal/Kangan if heading toward Zoji La.
- Carry a light jacket even in summer — the valley wind is cold.
- Do not drive onto meadows. Use parking bays and follow local taxi guidance at Thajiwas.
