Srinagar to Gurez Valley — self drive guide
Remote valley • Razdan Pass (3,556 m) • Permit checks
At a glance: Gurez is roughly 125 km north of Srinagar via Bandipora and Razdan Pass — about 6 hours when the road is open and clear. It is a remote, beautiful valley near the Line of Control, reached over a high pass that is closed for much of winter. Distances and times are approximate — pass status dictates everything.
Best season and pass status
May“October is the usual window when Razdan Pass is reliably open. June“September gives the most stable weather. The pass is typically closed from late November to April due to snow — opening dates shift each year with snow clearance. Even in season, landslides or fresh snow can close the road for a day. Always check the current Bandipora“Gurez advisory the morning you plan to go.
Road conditions
Srinagar to Bandipora is a standard highway. Beyond Bandipora the road narrows, climbs to Razdan Pass with tight hairpins, and then descends into Gurez along the Kishanganga River. The surface varies — from smooth tarmac to patched and broken sections near the pass. There are army checkpoints. Keep speed modest, respect convoy or timing controls, and carry physical ID.
Which car suits Gurez?
An Adventure SUV is essential for Gurez — good ground clearance, confident hill climbing, and space for extra fuel awareness and luggage. A Comfort Car is not appropriate for this route. If we have any doubt about your dates or load, we will say so on WhatsApp.
Permits and checks
Gurez is a sensitive border area. Indian nationals typically need to register and show ID at checkpoints; foreign nationals may have additional restrictions or may not be permitted — verify the current rule for your nationality well before travel. Keep original ID and copies accessible. Do not photograph military installations.
Planning a Gurez trip
Treat Gurez as an overnight trip, not a quick day drive. Stay options are limited and basic — often homestays or Dawar village lodges. Fuel up fully in Srinagar and again at Bandipora. Carry cash, a power bank, warm layers and a paper copy of your permit/registration.
- Start very early (5“6 am) from Srinagar to clear the pass in daylight.
- Share your full passenger list and IDs in advance with the checkpoint process.
- Build a buffer day — if the pass closes, you may need to wait.
